Bovine Tuberculosis Surveillance

For 2016, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife has designated two bovine tuberculosis surveillance zones. Zone 1 encompasses all of Boone County and Zone 2 encompasses Fleming, Nicholas, and Bath counties.

2016 Bovine TB surveillance Zones

Zone 1: Boone County

Zone 2: Nicholas, Bath, and Fleming Counties

The KDFWR will need to collect 500 deer from each zone. Hunters are encouraged to drop off any age and sex classes of deer from the designated counties, including does and yearlings. Due to higher likelihood of detection in bucks and older age classes, testing of older-age bucks is encouraged. All age classes, except for fawns will be accepted for testing.

Hunters who are concerned about bovine tuberculosis in their harvested deer or are willing to assist with surveillance efforts are being asked to bring deer to designated drop-off locations in Boone , Nicholas, Bath and Fleming counties during the first two weekends of modern gun season, or can contact a biologist using the toll-free number, 1-800-858-1549 to arrange a time and location for heads to be sampled.

The samples needed are found in the head and neck of the deer, so these areas should be preserved in the deer that are processed in the field.

Hunters who wish to have their deer mounted can provide the name of the taxidermist so that arrangements can be made to collect the samples from that location.
