Despite record heat around 90 degrees for the opening of the 2007 firearms
season for elk, 47 hunters checked in a bull elk the weekend of Oct. 6-7.
Hunters took elk from Perry, Pike, Leslie, Knox, Knott, Harlan, Floyd, Clay,
Bell and Breathitt counties. The majority of those elk were taken from privately
owned property.
Although hunters had the option of taking an elk with a
bow, all of the bulls checked in during opening weekend were taken with a rifle.
Kentucky issued 88 bull elk tags this year: 75 hunters were
drawn for the quota hunt, 10 tags were issued to landowners in return for
opening their property to public hunting, the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife
Commission issued two special tags, while the last tag went to a youth hunter
drawn at random.
Firearms season for bull elk closes Oct. 12. Firearms
season for cow elk opens Dec. 8.
