River Otter/Turtle Exhibit

Project Description: This exhibit, designed by GBBN Architects, is fully accessible and includes both above ground and underwater viewing. The River Otter habitat (right) will be separate from the Turtle habitat (left), though both will represent semi-aquatic species native to the state. An amphitheater between the two allows a staging location for public programs, while a covered platform (above) allows for outdoor programming during inclement weather. Behind the scenes will be the lock-down area for the otters, a food preparation area, and an extensive, state-of-the-art pump and filter system for both pools to maintain clarity and assure the health of the animals.

Importance: The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources has been instrumental in restoring river otters to the state. Otters disappeared from the state in the mid-1900's after years of unregulated harvest, habitat destruction, and pollution. Habitat restoration and improved regulations led to the tentative return of the species to western Kentucky during the 1980's, but in order to assure their success, the Department began restoration of the species across the state beginning in 1991. The state now boasts healthy populations of these fascinating predators, but misconceptions about them persist.

The River Otter/Turtle exhibit will offer an opportunity for the public to learn more about the history and ecology of otters, as well as other species that share their wetland habitat. We anticipate that the popularity of this exhibit alone will draw thousands more visitors to the Salato Center - and this allows us a greater opportunity to educate them about other issues of importance to Kentucky wildlife.

Estimated Cost: $1.5 million
