Holding and Transportation of Captive Cervids

Ø      A Commercial or Non-commercial Captive Cervid Permit shall be obtained prior to possessing any cervid.

Ø      You may only obtain your stock from currently permitted captive cervid facilities deemed by the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

Ø      A Captive Cervid Permit cannot be obtained for an orphaned deer or elk found in the wild.  “Abandoned” wildlife should always be left alone because an adult is often nearby and will come back to care for its young.  Otherwise, injured or orphaned wildlife may be taken to a wildlife rehabilitator (http://fw.ky.gov/app1/rehablist.aspx).

Ø      A “Commercial and Non-commercial Captive Cervid Permit Application” should be filled out and signed.

Ø      Schedule an inspection for your facility with your local Law Enforcement Captain (http://fw.ky.gov/kfwis/viewable/lawenforcement_districts.pdf).

Ø      A Commercial Captive Cervid Permit is an annual fee of $150.00 per facility.

Ø      A Non-commercial Captive Cervid Permit is $75.00 per facility per every 3 years.

Ø      Mail application and correct payment to #1 Sportsman’s Lane, Frankfort, KY 40601, ATTN: Captive Cervid Permit.  (Make checks payable to KDFWR.)
