Transportation and Holding of Exotic Wildlife

Ø      Prior to entry into KY, an Annual or Individual Transportation Permit shall be obtained for all shipments of wildlife (except those specified in 301 KAR 2:082).

Ø      All shipments of wildlife shall be accompanied by a certificate of veterinary inspection stating that the wildlife is free of symptoms of disease.  A federal quarantine certificate may be substituted for the certificate of veterinary inspection.

Ø      Persons shall be responsible for applying for a transportation permit who:

o       Receive a shipment of wildlife

o       Import wildlife for their own use or possession

o       Transport wildlife into and through the state to a destination outside KY

Ø      Individual Transportation Permit

o       Good for 1 shipment of wildlife (no limit on # of animals)

o       $25.00 per shipment

o       Please allow at least 10 business days for the application to be processed.

Ø      Annual Transportation Permit

o       Allows an unlimited number of shipments for a period of one year.

o       $250.00 per year, permit expires 1 year from date of issue

o       An Annual Transportation Permit holder must notify KDFWR at least 48 hours prior to each shipment of wildlife and report the date of expected shipment, source of shipment, species, and number being shipped.

Ø      KDFWR does not require a permit to hold exotic wildlife (but see prohibited species list), only a transportation permit if imported from out of state.

 

PROHIBITED EXOTIC WILDLIFE

Ø      The general public cannot import, possess, or transport through KY any of the following: (and see Inherently Dangerous additions (as of 7/13/05) following this list)

(Note: The Commissioner may exempt Zoos, Government Agencies, Colleges, Universities, or Circuses from the prohibited species regulations)

 

o       Any federally threatened or endangered species

o       Baya weaver (Plocius phillipinus)

o       Blackbirds (Genus Agelaius), except native species

o       Cape sparrow (Passer melanurus)

o       Cowbirds (Genus Molothrus), except native species

o       Cuckoo (Family Cuculidae), except native species

o       Dioch or red-bellied quelea (Quelea quelea)

o       European blackbird (Turdus merula)

o       Fieldfare (Turdus pillar)

o       Flying fox or fruit bat (Genus Pteropus)

o       Gambian giant pouched rat (Cricetomys gambianus)

o       Giant marine or cane toad (Bufo marinus)

o       Hawaiian rice bird or spotted munia (Lonchura punctalata nisoria)

o       Jack rabbit (Genus Lepus)

o       Java sparrow (Padda oryzivora)

o       Madagascar weaver (Foudia madagascariensis)

o       Mistle thrush (Turdus viscivorus)

o       Monk or Quaker parakeet (Myiopsitta monachus)

o       Multimammate rat (Subgenus Mastomys)

o       Mute swan (Cygnus olor)

o       Nutria (Myocastor coypus)

o       Prairie Dog (Cynomys spp.)

o       Raccoon Dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides)

o       San Juan rabbit (Orytolagus cuniculus)

o       Sky lark (Alauda arvensis)

o       Song thrush (Turdus philomelus)

o       Starlings (Family Sturnidae), except for Indian Hill Mynahs (Graclua religiosa)

o       Suricate or slender-tailed meerkat (Genus Suricata)

o       Tongueless or African clawed frog (Aenopus laevis)

o       Weaver finches (Genus Passer), except Passer domesticus

o       White eyes (Genus Zosterops)

o       Wild European rabbit (aka San Juan rabbit)

o       Yellowhammer (Emberiza citrinella)

o       Any member of the family Suidae (pigs or hogs), except domestic swine

o       Any member of the family Viverridae (civits, genets, lingsangs, mongooses, and fossas)

o       Any member of the family Tayassuidae (peccaries and javelinas)

 

 

Prohibited Wildlife: Inherently Dangerous as of 7/13/05

** A person may temporarily transport or display a prohibited animal on the Inherently Dangerous list in KY for less than 96 hours if at all times the animal is confined to prevent escape.  A transportation permit must be obtained prior to entry into KY.

 

o       Adders or vipers (Family Viperidae and Crotalidae) (except native species)

o       Alligators or caimans (Family Alligatoridae)

o       African buffalo (Syncerus caffer)

o       Bears (Family Ursidae)

o       Cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus)

o       Clouded leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)

o       Cobras, mambas or coral snakes (Family Elapidae)

o       Crocodiles (Family Crocodylidae)

o       Elephants (Family Elephantidae)

o       Gavials (Family Gavialidae)

o       Gila monsters or beaded lizards (Family Helodermatidae)

o       Hippopotamus (Hippopotamus amphibious)

o       Honey badger or ratel (Mellivora campensis)

o       Hyenas (Family Hyaenidae, all species except aardwolves (Proteles cristatus)

o       Lions, jaguars, leopards or tigers (Genus Panthera)

o       Old World Badger (Meles meles)

o       Primates nonhuman (Order Primates)

o       Rhinoceroses (Family Rhinocerotidae)

o       Sea snakes (Family Hydrophidae)

o       Snow leopard (Uncia uncial)

o       Venomous rear-fanged species (Family Colubridae) except hognose snakes (Genus Heterodon)

o       Wolverine (Gulo gulo)

o       Hybrids of all species included on this list

 

 

WILDLIFE THAT DO NOT NEED TRANSPORTATION PERMITS TO COME INTO KY:

 

Ø      Alpaca (Lama pacos)

Ø      American bison (Bison bison)

Ø      Breeds and varieties of goats derived from the wild goat or bezoar (Capra aegagrus)

Ø      Camels (Camelus bactrianus and Camelus dromedarius)

Ø      Chinchillas (Chinchilla laniger)

Ø      Cockatoos (family Cacatuidae)

Ø      Domesticated races of ducks and geese (family Anatidae) distinguishable morphologically from wild ducks or geese

Ø      Domesticated races of European rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) distinguishable from wild rabbits

Ø      Domesticated races of mink (Mustela vison) if adults are heavier than 1.15 kg or the fur color can be distinguished from wild mink

Ø      Domestic swine, except free-roaming or feral wild boars or wild swine

Ø      Domesticated races of rats (Rattus norvegicus or Rattus rattus) or mice (Mus musculus).

Ø      Domesticated races of turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo) recognized by the American Poultry Association and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but shall not include captive held or bred wild turkeys.

Ø      Domestic yak (Bos grunniens)

Ø      Gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus)

Ø      Guinea fowl (Mumida megeagris)

Ø      Guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus)

Ø      Hamsters (Mesocricetus spp.)

Ø      Indian Hill mynahs (Graclua religiosa)

Ø      Llama (Lama glama)

Ø      Parrots, lovebirds, cockatiels, budgerigar, parakeets (except monk parakeet (M. monachus), macaws (family Psittacidae)

Ø      Peafowl (Pavo cristatus)

Ø      Pigeons (Columba domestica or Columba livia) or domesticated races of pigeons

Ø      Ratites, as defined by KRS 247.870 (birds that cannot fly: ostrich, emu, rheas, kiwis and cassowaries)

Ø       Toucans (family Rhamphastidae)
