A partial survey was completed on December 22, 2009, with Thomas Young and Mike Morton observing.  All survey routes were completed except for the portions of the Ohio River from Uniontown to Golconda.  Temperature was approximately 40 degrees and skies were overcast much of the day, with a slight South wind.  Most rivers and tributaries were within their banks, with most shallow wetlands and moist soil units full.  Compared to the November 30th survey, larger concentrations of both mallards and especially white fronts and snow geese were observed on the Sauerheber unit of Slough’s WMA.  Happy hunting!

Some areas not surveyed do to weather delays.  Numbers for the Ballard/Boatwright complex were much lower than they have been in recent years for this portion of the migration season.  Heavy ice is normally the reason for low numbers in late December, but that is not the case since ice was non-existent with the generally mild (seasonable) weather over that past week or so.  Some green-winged teal, pintail, gadwall and even a few shovelers were observed in a few areas covered, while mallards comprising a majority of the ducks.

Water conditions within the region are very good overall.  The big rivers are almost completely within their banks after a short duration low level flood event.

The survey was started in tough survey weather with low visibility (almost always less then 5 miles) and low celings.  Snow had fallen over the region and snow cover ranged from patchy to 100% cover.  Temperatures were above freezing, so no water was frozen.  Water was abundant on the landscape, with every small depression being bank full.  Cave Run Lake was much higher than last flight and waters were very muddy.  There were a scattering of ducks at the Bluegrass Army Depot and Cave Run Lake.  The flats area was mostly covered with no bird concentrations.  There were numerous small groups of ducks in the oxbow lakes and depressions along the southern portion of the Licking River.  After Cave Run Lake, the survey was canceled as the plane began icing up with clear ice.
