We love Kentucky wildlife and want to tell you everything about it! ...but most groups can't stay that long. "Interpretive" programs are designed to bring a simple topic to life by making it personal, revealing, and engaging. Interpretive programs spark the imagination, hold attention, and stimulate a desire to learn more.
The Salato Center is happy to offer several interpretive programs to school groups in grades K-12. Programs regularly offered include Reptiles, Birds, and Habitats. Descriptions of each program are below. Each program lasts approximately 30-minutes, and time will be allowed for children to ask questions at the end. All programs focus on native Kentucky species and habitats. Classroom Programs at Salato are currently only offered on Friday mornings for groups with between 10 and 70 participants.
Kentucky Reptiles: Reptiles include snakes, lizards and turtles. They all have common characteristics known as adaptations. These features help reptiles to survive. Students will learn how to classify creatures as reptiles based on their adaptations. This program uses live animals as well as plenty of shells, skins, and other props. The focus is on these unique traits, the distinction between venomous and non-venomous species, common myths, and much more!
Kentucky Birds: All birds have common characteristics known as adaptations that help them to survive. Biologists classify birds into groups based on these adaptations or diet. This program involves interaction with different feathers, egg replicas, feet, skulls and may feature one or more live animals.
Kentucky Habitats: All living things live in specific habitats that help them survive. Kentucky is home to many different habitats with a variety of wildlife and plants. This program will look at different habitats here in Kentucky, the different animals that live in each and how they all interact through the environment and food web. This program involves interaction with a number of props and will feature live animals.
