Salato is hiring for the following position:​


Office Support Assistant I (Interim)

Are you passionate about wildlife conservation and looking for a dynamic opportunity? Join us as an Office Support Assistant I at Salato Wildlife Education Center with the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR). In this 9-month full-time seasonal position, you'll play a crucial role in providing exceptional visitor services, all while sharing your enthusiasm for KDFWR's vital role in the management and conservation of fish and wildlife. This position pays $14.00/hr. and runs from March through November.​

Responsibilities:

  • Assist at a busy information desk, offering support and information to visitors.
  • Operate a point-of-sale system for admissions, memberships, licenses, and merchandise.
  • Handle cash transactions, manage cash drawers, and prepare daily cash transmittals and receipts.
  • Answer and direct telephone and email inquiries with professionalism and accuracy.
  • Assist with field trip bookings and rentals.
  • Conduct general maintenance of exhibits, grounds, and hiking trails using basic tools.
  • Perform some outdoor work, ensuring the overall upkeep of the facility.

Qualifications​​:​​​

  • Work 37.50 hours per week, Tuesday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. from March through November.
  • Comfortable handling cash transactions and communicating with the public in person, over the phone, and in writing.
  • Proficient in computer usage and familiar with basic office tools and small hand tools (e.g., leaf blowers, weed eaters, shovels, etc.).
  • Ability to perform tasks in both indoor and outdoor settings, including running, stooping, bending, pushing, pulling, and lifting heavy objects.
  • Obtain certification in CPR/First Aid and be prepared to respond to emergencies.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license.

Volunteer Program

Time to spare? Whether you are willing to donate several hours or several weeks a year, we promise the experience will be worthwhile. You don’t have to be a wildlife specialist to be a Salato Wildlife Education Center volunteer. All that is required is a positive attitude, an interest in animals and/or plants, and the ability to work with people of all ages.

Whether you enjoy working outdoors or indoors, Salato has something for everyone! Some volunteers may choose to work in Conservation Education, conducting educational programs or helping with special activities; while other volunteers may choose to get their hands dirty helping with plants, trails and special projects.

Everyone has something to offer. We accept those willing to volunteer from ages 16 and up. Retirees are welcome!

Internship Opportunities

 

“Gain Useful Knowledge and Experience While Earning College Credit”

Depending on the career in mind, the Salato Wildlife Education Center offers a wide variety of opportunities for students to expand their knowledge and gain valuable experience in their chosen field. Internships are available to currently enrolled college students looking to earn course credit for their work. Interns earn college credit for leading interpretive programs in a formal and informal setting, using props and live animals as educational tools, landscaping with native plants, and much more!

Salato is looking for enthusiastic students interested in and/or majoring in wildlife biology, wildlife management, horticulture, education, public relations, or other related fields.
