Euglena

Euglena (Euglena spp.) are unicellular organisms that have characteristics of both plants and animals.  The mobile form has flagella that it uses to move around the pond to areas of better light penetration or more nutrients.  The encysted non-mobile form usually floats on the surface and forms a rusty-brown or green skim on the margins.  It is often found in ponds that receive nutrients from pastures and feedlots.

Management Options

Mechanical Options
There are no practical mechanical options for controlling euglena due to their small size and unicellular nature.

Biological Options
Biological options are not available due a lack of species that consume them.

Chemical Options
The active ingredients that have been successful in treating brown euglena include: copper based compounds (E), sodium carbonate peroxyhydrate (G), alkylamine salts of endothall (G), and flumioxazin (G). E = excellent, G = good
