FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 20, 2024) — A portion of Meadow Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA) in Wayne County will be included in a cedar tree harvest project scheduled Sept. 23 – Dec. 31, 2024.
Cedar trees harvested from the WMA will be utilized for a fish habitat improvement project at Lake Cumberland.
To minimize disturbance to WMA users, no cedar harvest will occur during the youth-only deer gun season (Oct. 12-13), early deer muzzleloader (Oct. 19-20), deer modern gun season (Nov. 9-24), late deer muzzleloader season (Dec. 14-22) or the free youth weekend (Dec. 28-29).
The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will announce the start of this project in an update posted on its website (fw.ky.gov) and X (@kyfishwildlife).
Additionally, a project announcement will be placed on Meadow Creek WMA’s information webpage (Meadow Creek Wildlife Management Area) on Kentucky Fish and Wildlife’s website and will remain on that page until project completion. Signs will also be posted on the WMA at the access points to the project location.
Access to the 232-acre WMA will not be affected and will remain open for public use.
Did You Know: Like all other animals, fish need suitable habitat for living in, raising their young and foraging for food. Most of the lakes in Kentucky were created more than 50 years ago and are starting to show their age. Natural processes like sedimentation and decay of woody structure can reduce the number of places that fish have for spawning and nursery habitat. KDFWR has active projects across the Commonwealth designed to improve, enhance and replace this habitat that has been lost due to time.
