Each year, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources (KDFWR) recognizes an individual, company or organization that supports the Peregrine Falcon Program in an outstanding way. Yearly recipients are listed below.
We greatly appreciate LG&E and KU Trimble County Generating Station's generous cooperation and assistance with their nesting peregrine falcons this year. The staff at the Trimble County Generating Station were exceptionally accommodating of KDFWR personnel. The Trimble Co. facility has been one of the most productive nest sites for peregrine falcons in the state, with 59 falcons successfully fledging since 2001. LG&E and KU Trimble Co. Generating Station staff went above and beyond to care for the falcons this season by assisting with the installation of a trail camera, banding chicks, administering trichomonas medication, recovering an injured falcon, and assisting with the cleaning of the nest box. Our sincerest thanks to LG&E and KU Trimble Co. Generating Station’s staff for their many years of involvement in Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program.

Recognized for their exceptional cooperation of Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. We greatly appreciate LG&E-KU Ghent Generating Station's generous cooperation and assistance with their nesting peregrine falcons this year. The staff at the LG&E-KU Ghent Generating Station were exceptionally accommodating of KDFWR personnel. Ghent has been the most productive site for peregrine falcons in the state, with 64 falcons successfully fledging since 2001. LG&E-KU Ghent Generating Station staff went above and beyond to care for the falcons this season by assisting with the installation of a trail camera, banding chicks, and cleaning the nest box after the chicks had fledged. Our sincerest thanks to LG&E-KU Ghent Generating Station staff for their many years of involvement in Kentucky's peregrine falcon program.

Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. Despite an unusual peregrine falcon nesting season, the staff at the Nucor Steel Gallatin were very accommodating of KDFWR personnel in 2020. Nucor Steel Gallatin provided many observation opportunities, aided in the effort of safely transitioning an injured falcon to a permitted wildlife rehabilitator, and helped coordinate the rehabilitated bird's release at their facility. Nucor Steel Gallatin staff went above and beyond to care for the falcons this season. Our sincerest thanks to Nucor Steel Gallatin's staff for their involvement in Kentucky's peregrine falcon program.

Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. This year, a territorial dispute resulted in the replacement of the male falcon at Mill Creek Station. This male would become injured during the breeding season and would require aid from a wildlife rehabilitation facility. LG&E staff members aided in the effort to rescue the injured falcon. The staff at LG&E also provided additional access of the nest box and assisted with the daily monitoring of the webcam in order to ensure the chicks were healthy, with only one parent providing for them. The LG&E staff were instrumental in the success of the peregrine falcon nest this year. Our sincerest thanks to LG&E and the Mill Creek Station staff for their involvement our peregrine falcon program.

Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. This year, two of the falcon chicks were removed from the nest during banding since they showed signs of throat infection. The chicks were transported to a rehabilitation facility, for further testing and treatment. The chicks were successfully treated and released in the fall. The Ghent staff were instrumental during the special attention this nest required this year, going above and beyond to assisting KDFWR staff along the way. Our sincerest thanks to LG&E-UK and the Ghent Generating Station staff for their involvement in the 2018 peregrine falcon nesting season.
Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. This year, the Trimble County Generating Station served as a fostering location for a young peregrine falcon chick. The LG&E-KU Trimble County staff were instrumental in this process, allowing KDFWR staff to access the station whenever needed, and reporting observations of the young falcons until the birds fledged. The foster chick at this location suffered a wing injury during a fledging accident. The LG&E-KU Trimble County staff quickly contacted the department, and worked with Raptor Rehabilitation Inc. to transport the bird to Louisville, KY for rehabilitation. The young falcon successfully underwent rehab and was released. This bird’s success story can be largely be attributed to the dedication the LG&E-KU Trimble County staff have for the well-being of the peregrine falcons at their station. Our sincerest thanks to LG&E-KU and the Trimble County Generating Station for their involvement in the 2017 peregrine falcon nesting season.
Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. This was the first time a pair of peregrine falcons successfully nested in downtown Lexington. This year’s nesting success can largely be attributed to the many people involved in the monitoring efforts and accommodations provided for the falcons on the World Trade Center Building. The Webb Companies provided KDFWR with access and assistance whenever needed. Our sincerest thanks to the Webb Companies and their involvement in the 2016 falcon nesting season in Lexington.
Recognized for their exceptional cooperation with Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program. We greatly appreciate the generous cooperation and contribution that was made by EKPC and associated partners for the falcon transmitter project. Many people were involved with this project, including Spurlock Generation Station personnel and EKPC Corporate personnel. This project was funded by EKPC.
On June 7th, 2015, for the first time, a satellite transmitter was attached to Kentucky nesting peregrine falcon. The transmitter was attached to the breeding female (named Spurlo) at the Spurlock Generating Station in Maysville, KY. The transmitter allowed biologists to gain important information on peregrine falcon ecology. This information can be used to steer future conservation decisions. This project took an enormous amount of cooperation and we greatly appreciate the support of EKPC in this pilot project.
Recognized for his exceptional volunteerism for Kentucky's peregrine falcon program. Thom has volunteered his time for the past five years to monitor the falcon pair at the Dow Chemical Company in Louisville, KY. Thom conducts several site visits each season to this tough-to-access location and submits detailed monitoring reports and high quality photos to KDFWR.
Thom was previously the Safety Coordinator at this facility (back when it was run by Rohm and Haas) and retired in 2009. His background with the facility and interest in the falcons has been most helpful in managing this falcon nest. KDFWR greatly appreciates Thom’s time and effort!
Recognized for their exceptional support of Kentucky's peregrine falcon program. The generous cooperation and contribution that was made by Louisville Gas and Electric-Kentucky utilities (LG&E-KU) and associated partners for the falcon webcam project is much appreciated. Many people were involved with this project, including Mill Creek Station personnel, LG&E-KU Corporate personnel, and Advanced Global Communications personnel. This project was funded by LG&E-KU.
This was the first live peregrine falcon webcam to be installed in Kentucky, and attracted thousands of followers in its first year of existence. Recognized for their exceptional support of Kentucky’s peregrine falcon program in 2012. Reconstruction began on the Milton-Madison (US-421) Bridge in 2011. Meanwhile, this bridge has provided nesting habitat for a pair of peregrine falcons since 2002.
The generous cooperation and careful coordination of the Milton-Madison Bridge Project allowed the peregrine falcons to continue to produce young throughout the construction process. Furthermore, the project provided KDFWR biologists access to conduct monitoring activities and guaranteed the falcons a safe nesting location on the new bridge once construction is complete.
The Milton-Madison Bridge Project is comprised of several public and private entities, some of the key players including Walsh Construction, Micheal Baker Jr., Inc., the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC), and the Indiana Department of Transportation. KDFWR greatly appreciates the cooperation of everyone involved with accommodating the peregrine falcons during the bridge reconstruction.
