FRANKFORT, Ky. (Aug. 1, 2024) — Whether you attended Camp John Currie as a child or wished you had, an upcoming celebration of the conservation camp’s 75th anniversary promises guests a chance to experience its thrills just as thousands of Kentucky children have throughout the years.
The anniversary event, presented by the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation, is scheduled from 2 - 9 p.m. (CT) on Saturday, Aug. 10 at the camp northeast of Benton, Kentucky.
Tickets are available through the foundation’s website (kentuckywildlife.com) and cost $75. Each ticket includes dinner, a vintage camp t-shirt, a commemorative camp patch and access to a silent auction. Proceeds will support projects for future campers at Camp Currie.
Conservation educators from the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources will provide instruction in archery, boating, rifle and shotgun shooting, fishing and casting, nature exploration and outdoor survival. Special demonstrations by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife staff are also planned during the event.
Camp John Currie, which opened in 1949, is the oldest of three conservation camps operated by Kentucky Fish and Wildlife. Camp Earl Wallace on Lake Cumberland opened in 1951, and Camp Robert C. Webb on Grayson Lake opened in 1969.
The camps teach outdoor skills and conservation education to Kentucky children in grades 4-6. Camp Currie hosted almost 1,500 campers over its eight weeks of operation this summer.
Registration for next camp season opens in January. More information about the camp and employment opportunities is available online at fw.ky.gov.
