Michael Kinney

Fish and Wildlife Technician III,
Fisheries Division

Kinney is a technician with the Northwestern Fisheries District based in Calhoun in McLean County. He is retiring this year after working for Kentucky Fish and Wildlife for more than 30 years.

Kinney assists biologists with fish population surveys and habitat work, maintaining detailed records on fish habitat and fertilization efforts in district lakes. He also takes care of the grounds at the district office and nearby state-owned lakes. Additionally, he interacts daily with the public, providing information and assistance, and maintains fishing rods and reels available to use at kids' fishing events.

Kinney holds a bowfin he encountered while surveying a lake in the Northwestern Fisheries District. Bowfins are a modern representative of an ancient group of fishes, like gar and sturgeon, that date back to the Jurassic times.
