Fish and Wildlife Commission to hold special meeting April 1

FRANKFORT, Ky. (March 30, 2021) — The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission will hold a special called video teleconference meeting at 3 p.m. (EDT) on Thursday, April 1.

Pursuant to Executive Order 2020-243 and Senate Bill 150, Section 1(8), the Commission will not be holding an in-person meeting. The public is encouraged to view the special meeting online via livestream on the Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources' YouTube channel at youtube.com/FishandWildlifeKY. A link to the livestream also will be posted on the department's homepage at fw.ky.gov at the start of the meeting.

Due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) precautions, public comments will be handled as follows:

  • Those wishing to comment about a topic on the agenda may email their comments with "Public Comments" in the email's subject line to FW.PublicAffairs@ky.gov beginning March 30 and continuing through noon (12 p.m., EDT) on April 1.
  • Comments will be read by department staff up to 3 minutes total per commenter during the "Public Comments" time on the agenda.
  • Commenters must include their first and last name(s), Kentucky county of residence or state of residence if a nonresident, and organizational affiliation and position, if an individual is an officer or official representative for a particular organization. Contact information is not required but will be helpful if information is requested.
  • The Commission chair reserves the right to decline public reading of any comments that are libelous, profane, derogatory of others, or not relevant to the meeting agenda.
  • The Commission will review all public comments.

The Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commission is a nine-member board, comprised of volunteers who serve four-year terms. The Commission recommends hunting, fishing and boating regulations on behalf of the sportspersons of the Commonwealth.

  • Proposal: Bear Zones Modification
    Amend 301 KAR 2:300Black bear seasons and requirements.
    • Hunters have requested that Leslie, Perry, and Pike counties be removed from East Zone 2 and each receive a 2-female bear quota per season. 
  • Proposal: Restrict anglers to use of single hooks only in Green River Lake stilling basin
    Amend 301 KAR 1:201
    • Some anglers have been illicitly snagging walleye and muskellunge using modified treble hooks attached to fishing lures while fishing in the concrete stilling basin immediately downstream of the dam on Green River Lake. KDFWR's Fisheries and Law Enforcement divisions propose to specify that only single hooks may be used by anglers fishing in the stilling basin.
  • Proposal: Establish Sunny Brook WMA in Rowan County
    • Recent acquisition of a 142-acre tract of land for a Stream and Wetland Mitigation Program (FILO) project could provide hunting opportunities and additional public access to the adjacent Daniel Boone National Forest. If approved by the Commission, staff will mark boundaries, prepare signage, parking lot, and online map, then open the WMA for hunting under statewide regulations applicable to Rowan County. The tract would need to be temporarily closed at times for stream restoration construction activities in the future, which would be accomplished by locking the gate and through signage.
