FRANKFORT, Ky. (Sept. 19, 2022) — The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources invites the public to celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day on Saturday, Sept. 24 at the Salato Wildlife Education Center.

In recognition of National Hunting and Fishing Day, now in its 50th year, the Salato Center will offer free admission and several family-friendly activities. As a bonus, the first 50 children (ages 5-18) through the doors will receive a complimentary fishing pole or deer call, while supplies last, courtesy of the Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Foundation.

Doors open at 9 a.m. (EDT) and activities will continue until 3:30 p.m.

The Salato Center, located on Kentucky Fish and Wildlife's headquarters campus in Frankfort, features native wildlife in naturalized enclosures, conservation exhibits and paved walking trails through a variety of habitats.

The National Hunting and Fishing Day event serves to recognize the contributions to conservation made by the more than 700,000 Kentucky hunters and anglers, who support 35,000 jobs by their spending each year. Anyone interested in hunting, fishing or wildlife conservation is invited to join the fun.

In keeping with the theme of the day, special activities at the Salato Center will include an opportunity to try basic archery from 9 – 11 a.m., a hunting dog demonstration at 10 a.m. and fishing rod casting activities from 1:30 - 3:30 p.m.

A presentation on elk by Salato Center staff will start at center's live elk exhibit at 2:30 p.m. Kentucky Fish and Wildlife fisheries biologists and conservation officers will be present to answer questions about hunting and fishing opportunities, and licenses will be available for purchase. Copies of the Kentucky Hunting and Trapping Guide will be available, as well as free Salato stickers, while supplies last.
