Meade County announces historic transfer of Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area

FRANKFORT, Ky. (July 2, 2026) — The Meade County Fiscal Court is proud to announce the official transfer of the Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area to Meade County, marking a historic milestone in the restoration of one of the county's most treasured public spaces.

This achievement is the result of a strong partnership between the Meade County Fiscal Court, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources, and the National Park Service. Through years of collaboration and a shared commitment to conservation and outdoor recreation, these partners have made it possible for Otter Creek to enter an exciting new era under local stewardship.

"This is a proud day for Meade County," said Meade County Judge Executive Troy Kok. "Otter Creek has always been more than just a park, it is part of our community's identity. Bringing it under local ownership gives us the opportunity to honor its history, and once again establish it as a premier outdoor recreation destination."

The transfer returns more than 2,300 acres of forests, trails, campgrounds and many recreational amenities to local management, allowing the county to invest in improvements that enhance the visitor experience. Building on the county's successful management of Otter Creek Campground, Meade County will continue expanding recreational opportunities, supporting tourism and creating new economic benefits for local businesses.

The Fiscal Court is committed to preserving Otter Creek's legacy while ensuring it remains a place where families can camp, hike, hunt, fish, bike, paddle and enjoy the outdoors for generations to come.

Founded by the National Park Service in 1934 as a recreational area for residents in Louisville and neighboring towns, Kentucky Fish and Wildlife took over operation of the property in 2011 to add much-needed hunting and fishing access for more than a million residents of Jefferson and neighboring counties. Today, the property offers opportunities for hunting, fishing and numerous other outdoor recreational activities.

“Meade County Fiscal Court has been a proven partner with its operation of the campground at Otter Creek for the last two years, and they will be great stewards of the entire property for years to come," said Kentucky Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Rich Storm. “County leadership has demonstrated concerted interest in preserving this special property for future generations and we are excited to continue our partnership as we maintain public hunting and fishing opportunities throughout Otter Creek."

Kentucky Fish and Wildlife will continue to operate and maintain the property's shooting range for Meade County, giving hunters and shooting sports enthusiasts an opportunity for target practice or to site-in their firearms. A shooting range permit, free with any annual hunting or fishing license by checking the applicable box on the department's License Sales webpage, is required to use the range.

"Today's announcement is about more than the transfer of property," Kok added. "It is about reclaiming a piece of Meade County's heritage and creating a destination that our residents can take pride in. We are grateful to Kentucky Fish and Wildlife, the National Park Service and everyone who helped make this vision a reality."

The Meade County Fiscal Court looks forward to working with residents, community organizations, and outdoor recreation partners as it begins the next chapter for Otter Creek Outdoor Recreation Area.
